At a glance
- Target bounded tasks such as classification and summarization.
- Check the prompt-length tier before estimating API costs.
- Measure retries and review work alongside model quality.
What was announced
Anthropic released Claude Haiku 5.5 on October 7 for high-volume, cost-sensitive workloads. It introduces adjustable effort to the Haiku family. The announcement highlights summarization, classification, context compaction and bounded subagent work. Source 1
Read the pricing tiers
At verification, the announcement lists $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens for prompts up to 100,000 tokens. Above that prompt length, the corresponding rates are $0.50 and $2.50. Caching has separate rates. These are vendor prices, not a statement about Youjie pricing or availability.
Our analysis: define a small testable job
A support-ticket classifier is a useful starting point. Keep representative tickets, define the expected labels, and measure missing fields, latency and human handoffs. A cheap response that needs correction may cost more than a more expensive response that passes review.
Where the evidence stops
The release is a vendor announcement. We have not independently benchmarked the model. Open-ended research and large code migrations need sustained judgment; the announcement itself continues to position larger models for complex agentic coding.
Before changing production traffic
Confirm the exact model identifier, supported tools and effort options with your provider. Separate short and long prompts in the cost report, keep a fallback model, and increase traffic only after a representative evaluation. Record the total cost of successful tasks, including retries and human review.
