GPT-6 Astra: context limits, coding and tool capabilities

Understand GPT-6 Astra’s context budget, image inputs and tool support, then evaluate it with a concrete codebase task.

At a glance

  • OpenAI positions Astra for complex reasoning, coding and research.
  • The 1.05M context window and 128K output limit describe different constraints.
  • Search, code execution and image generation require configured tools.

What Astra is intended for

OpenAI positions GPT-6 Astra for demanding reasoning, coding, computer use, research and document work. Its API identifier is gpt-6-astra. This article reviews the documentation; it does not report an independent model benchmark. Source 1

A useful trial would involve interacting constraints: tracing dependencies across modules, reconciling conflicting documents, or planning a migration with explicit acceptance criteria. For straightforward rewriting, compare a cheaper model before paying for capabilities the task may not require.

Context capacity is not output capacity

The documented context window is 1,050,000 tokens, with a maximum output of 128,000 tokens. Tokens are not interchangeable with words or characters. Reserve room for instructions, conversation history, tool results and the answer rather than treating input and output allowances as additive.

Large context capacity does not establish perfect recall. Label source files and document sections, request references, and check whether the model missed relevant evidence. A short, correctly supported change list may be more valuable than a long summary.

Tools need an execution environment

The page lists text and image inputs with text output. Audio and video are not listed as supported direct modalities. Responses API tools include search, code execution and computer use; image generation is a tool capability, not the base model’s native output modality. Source 1

Changing a model identifier does not provide a browser or terminal. The application must configure tools, permissions and execution. Check the selected provider route for actual support. This article does not imply that every tool is available in Youjie Studio.

Long prompts have a pricing consequence

Documented standard rates are $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. Above 272,000 input tokens, the entire request receives long-context pricing: input and cache rates multiply by two, and output rates by 1.5. Other processing modes and channel prices require separate checks. Source 1

Repeatedly sending an entire repository can therefore change both latency and cost. Start with relevant modules, then test whether additional context improves accepted results enough to justify the expense.

A practical evaluation

Provide a reproducible regression, relevant files and existing tests. Ask for the diagnosis, proposed change and verification evidence. Where code execution is enabled, use a recoverable branch or isolated environment.

Compare models using the same acceptance criteria, recording omissions, incorrect references, human repair time and the actual bill. The decision should reflect the total effort to finish the task. Documentation values here apply as of the verification date below.
