PRACTICE / CONVERSATION CONTEXT

Why a short follow-up can still have a large input bill

A request includes more than its last question. Inspect history and instructions, then use a concise handoff when the task changes.

Before you start

  • A signed-in account; paid calls require an enabled channel and quota.
  • Use non-sensitive demonstration material.

At a glance

  • Instructions, retained history and current material all contribute to input.
  • Studio selects from at most 20 recent completed turns, subject to a length budget.
  • A factual handoff preserves working state without carrying every discussion forward.

The last question may be a single sentence, while the request also contains system instructions, expert or skill guidance, previous answers and a document. Inspect that full input before deciding what to shorten.

Visible history and submitted history differ

The current Youjie Studio (Chinese interface) selects from at most 20 recent completed turns, with an additional message-length budget. Older records can remain visible without being included in a new request. Instructions and the current question also consume input space. Source 1

If an earlier decision is forgotten, first check whether it is still represented in the context. Restating an important requirement may be more useful than changing model settings.

A small cumulative example

Assume each turn adds 1,000 tokens and every request resends everything accumulated so far. Ten requests then contain 1,000 × (1 + 2 + … + 10) = 55,000 input tokens, not 10,000.

This explains repeated input; it is not Studio’s actual token count. Real requests also involve answers, truncation and caching. Asking for a shorter response does not remove a document that the application keeps attaching.

Prepare a factual handoff

When the subject changes, a compact handoff can carry the necessary working state:

Task: prepare release checks for an internal tool
Confirmed: existing sign-in; read-only queries; no payments
Decision: pilot with one department and retain human review
Unresolved: exception owner and log retention
Next step: list three questions for the business owner

This is a fictional example. Preserve decisions and their evidence; remove abandoned discussion. Keep links to original numbers, quotations or code. A compressed model summary should not become a replacement source of truth.

Compare like with like

Use usage records (Chinese interface) to compare similar tasks on the same model and group. Check input volume before examining cache behavior or pricing tiers. Two unrelated bills do not establish a measured saving from starting a new conversation. Source 2

Keep evidence recoverable

Retain original contractual wording, calculations, logs and passages that require exact quotation. A handoff summarizes state, not proof. Follow the conversation export guide to preserve the original record before reorganizing the work.
