Understand the three controls
In AI Studio, skills provide task methods, expert roles define perspective and style, and additional instructions express requirements for the current work. They are instructions to a model, not professional credentials or a guarantee of correctness.
Configure a paper-outline task
Open the Skill tab, search for relevant writing guidance and inspect its method and source. Select one skill, choose a suitable role and add: “Clarify the research question first. Do not invent references. Mark evidence gaps in the outline.” Save, then supply research material you already have.
Add skills gradually
The studio permits at most three selected skills. Overlapping methods can conflict or obscure which instruction caused a result. Begin with one and compare outcomes before adding more. Skill and expert text contributes to input tokens.
Know the execution boundary
The studio loads guidance text only. It does not install the original repository’s scripts, read referenced files automatically, browse the web or generate document files. An instruction inside a source skill to run a script does not mean the studio has that tool. Provide evidence yourself or use a separately authorized tool where needed.
Write a concrete expert role
A useful outline reviewer might check the research question, identify evidence gaps and propose actionable revisions. That is more testable than “be the best expert.” Use additional instructions for language, format and length preferences, then verify the selected role after saving.
Evaluate the combination
Compare the same material with a general configuration and your chosen combination. Check omissions, organization and citation accuracy rather than output length. Historical turns retain configuration records. Editing or deleting a custom role does not erase conversations, but subsequent tasks should use the intended current configuration.
